When to Go

Ireland is a wonderful place to visit year round. However, some months of the year are better than others. Knowing the trade-offs like smaller crowds or longer daylight hours can help when deciding when to go.

November, December, January & February

The winter months have limited daylight hours, which means less time at the attractions and more time in the pub, which is not entirely a bad trade.

March

March is the month of St. Patrick’s Day. Many people love to travel to Ireland during this blessed holiday. Towns will be full of life with colorful parades and other events, but lines may be long, restaurants may be full, and daylight will still be short.

April, May, early June, September & early October

You can find great deals on flights, cars and accommodations during the shoulder season. Attractions are open and there will not be as much traffic on the roads or at the sites. Daylight hours will be getting longer so you can enjoy museums, historical and other sites without hurry.

July & August

July and August are the peak travel months. Most go to Ireland in the summer because of flexible work schedules or because their children are on holiday from school. The crowds will be heavier and bed and breakfasts will fill up faster. But with careful planning, you can avoid the masses and have an exceptional time.

Weather

Irish weather is unpredictable all year-long. On any given day, be it December or July, you might experience four seasons of weather. This is all a part of Ireland’s charm. Be prepared for it by dressing in layers. Don’t try to predict the weather or the best days/months to travel. Just be open-minded and ready for anything. You will have a great time!

Preferences

If you have any time of the year to plan your trip, go during the shoulder months, particularly in late May or early June, and early September. The days are long, the weather is just as warm as the summer, and there aren’t many other tourists around. You will truly be able to experience Ireland at its best.
